4 Must Haves To Seal The Air Leaks In Your Home

1. Calking Guns

Caulking guns are designed to provide a continuous joint bead to seal the joint between the two surfaces, such as the gap between the window frame and the side column. Most of the caulking guns currently in use are manual. (You have to pull the hand trigger to dispense the sealant) Others are powered caulking guns. It is becoming more popular because you can create smooth, continuous beads by simply shaking the tip of the gun. The right caulking gun for you will be based on the type of the material you are using as the caulk. Keep in mind to check whether the following features are up to your projects standard.

  • Thrust Ratio - Thrust ratio is the force generated each time you pull the hand trigger. The higher the ratio, the more force is applied in each press. This is important because the various types of sealants are more or less viscous (thick). Thicker sealants require a higher thrust ratio to dispense the sealant (Ex. Epoxy sealant). Guns with a low gear ratio help apply thin types of sealants such as water based latex caulk.
  • Rod - Caulking guns with ratchet rods are usually inexpensive and suitable for light projects. One of the problem with these types of caulking guns is sealant can keep oozing caulk out while twisting the rod. This can lead to waste the sealants. Smooth rod caulking gun is another type that uses a dripless mechanism. User can operate the gun by depressing the thumb lever to prevent the sealant from escaping the tube.
  • Powering Mechanism - Electric, Pneumatic and Battery powered Caulking guns are available for the users.
  • Revolving Frame - Rotating frames allow you to caulk uninterruptedly by simply rotating the frame during caulking. This mechanism helps to run a continuous bead around a corner.

2. Weather Strip Kit

Weather-stripping can be used to seal the air leaks around movable building components such as doors or operable windows. Before weather-stripping, it is crucial to identify the air leaks and ventilation needs of your home. In this method simply cut the material according to the instructions with snips or large scissors and you can use these to enclose the required area. Check for the following aspects when weather-stripping your home.

  • The type of weather-stripping material should be suitable for temperature changes and wear and tear associated with the location.
  • The product should be specific for the location.
  • To determine the amount of weather-stripping you will need, add perimeters of all windows and doors to be weather-stripped and then add 5 -10% to account for any waste.

3. Insulation Products

When warming or cooling a house, whether, in winter or summer, you need to use insulation to keep the room temperature constant (Even if you don't keep the stove or air conditioner running all the time). The flow of air inside and outside the house is the movement of air through gaps and holes in walls, attics, crawl spaces, joists, doors, windows, outlets, and so on. This air leak is a major problem in many homes and causes energy loss and discomfort. Proper home insulation can help reduce your energy bill while ensuring that your home is a comfortable place to live.

4. Protective Equipment

It is crucial to use protective equipment when handling materials like spray foams. Especially, Spray polyurethane foam has increased the demand as well health hazards associated with them. These kinds of insulation are produced on the job site and not in the production facility. These chemicals need mixing for a quick reaction and expand to create a form that air seals. Toxic smoke and particles can remain in the air or move to other parts of the building. Workers must be familiar with these factors because it may not be safe to enter the building after installation. The following list shows the protective clothing required for foam insulation.

  • Respiratory protection: Air Purifying Respirator (APR) and Air Purifying Respirator (PAPR) for outdoor use. Self-contained breathing system (SAR) for indoor use.
  • Eye protectors: Safety goggles or goggles in combination with a face shield.
  • Hand protectors: Strong rubber chemical resistant gloves such as nitrile, neoprene, butyl, PVC.
  • Foot protection: Chemical-resistant boots and chemical resistant boot covers.
  • Head protection: Hooded respirator or hooded coveralls.
  • Skin protection: All exposed skin should be covered. Disposable chemical-resistant coveralls should be worn to protect against splashes and fog.
